Normativity

Normativity describes the fact that rules of behaviour (norms) and stereotypes prevail in every society and are taken for granted. This determines what is considered ‘normal’ and desirable and what is not. Heteronormativity describes the assumption that all people are heterosexual. Behaviour outside the prevailing norms often leads to discrimination. Normativity has an influence on power relations within a society.
